What are the basics to mowing?

Mowing a lawn is not rocket science. You hop on your tractor, put down the mower deck, and mow mow mow, right? Well, that is almost it. The basic instructions for mowing your lawn is not to mow more than 1/3 of the height of your grass at a time and select the correct height for the type of grass you have.

Grass mowing heights

According to the Better Lawn and Turf Institute most grass should be cut when the height is 3 inches down to a height of 2 inches. The few exceptions to this rule would be when mowing Bermuda grass, Centipede and Zoysia, which should be cut when their height reaches 2.25 inches down to a height of 1.5 inches. If this type of mowing routine is followed there is actually no need to rake or collect your grass clippings. They will become a natural part of your lawn ecosystem.
